The Fallout Creative Community announces The Fallout Art & Music Party Tour.  The tour will bring "inclusive and accessible celebrations of creativity" that include "Hands On" art stations, live music, film and kids activities to several South Dakota locations.

The Fallout is a nonprofit organization located in Aberdeen SD that has been hosting art and music parties for many years.  In October of 2009 they started holding these parties on a weekly basis.

These parties culminated in an Art & Music Festival in September of 2010 that had a diverse gathering of over 1000 people with a variety of abilities who produced hundreds of works of art at "creation stations" and over 550 people were served free meals. Over 30 musical acts and dozens of games, activities and performances were enjoyed by people of all ages.  This festival, now annual, saw an increase in attendance at its 2011 event.
The Fallout will take this popular festival and trim it down to fit in a trailer and tour to several South Dakota communities.  The tour is sponsored mainly by a grant from the SD Council on Developmental Disabilities and it's purpose is to promote arts communities that are inclusive to all people including people with disabilities.  The tour will visit Vermillion, Sioux Falls, Watertown, Pierre, Rapid City, Spearfish and Chamberlain.
The kickoff for the tour will be the Fallout's Art & Bicycle Spectacle in Aberdeen on May 25th - 27th.  This will be a festival with all of the regular hands-on art, live music and kids activities but it will have "bicycles" as it's theme.  Aberdeen ReCycle will do free tune-ups, South Dakota Bicycle Coalition will be giving away free helmets and water bottles and the Police Department will be offering free bike registration.  There will be a Bike themed Art show, bike games, mini-Tennis, creative workshops, a sculpture competition and much more.  This festival is also an annual event in its 6th year.
The Fallout formed organically out of a group of creative people who intentionally developed community and worked collaboratively over the past 10 years.  It has a diverse membership of people working together on music, art, film, performance art, writing, photography and many other creative endeavors.
The Fallout's mission is to be a visible and vibrant arts community that embraces people of all abilities to live creatively together.  The mission includes reaching out to and including people with developmental disabilities in the community.  They were encouraged to go to other SD towns to demonstrate creative parties and tell the Fallout's story to "plant seeds" of inclusive community.

Day 5: Watertown

We said goodbye to Sioux Falls on this morning and drove north to Watertown straight to County Fair Foods where our final stop would be. Grocery store owner, Jeff Gambers graciously hosted us in his parking lot and Mayors Advisory on Disabilities bought us lunch in the deli.
We found a good spot in the parking lot and started setting up. We were met by several volunteers from the area who came to help. Cindi Spieker from New Horizons did a bunch of ground work for us. Mike Grengs was a ring leader in helping us get things going. Pretty soon the party was in full swing with many visitors coming and taking part in the creativity. Our freinds Peter and Amber Boyle and their kids came early to hang out. We had a Michael Jackson impersonator do an impromptu perfromance and others eagerly took to the mics to participate in sing-a-long songs. People of all ages came and enjoyed the festive celebration.
When it was all done and we were all packed up we headed to HyVee where we had supper and a discussion with Mike Grangs about a Art & Music party back in Watertown in the future.
Watertowns party was a great success and with Mike's help we will return for more creative fun.

Day 4: Brookings SD and Black Sheep Coffee (Sioux Falls)

We took off to Brookings bright and early to set up at Mission Coffee House. Mission is a cool coffee house located in a Lutheran Church. They raise funds through the business to support good causes around the world. We were greeted by Carol Van Liere who fed us a yummy lunch and we commenced to setting up a very nice spread in the green grass of the churches back yard. It was the nicest looking setup so far. Unfortunately no one came. There was a wedding going on at the church so we saw dressed up people coming and going but other than that we had no visitors. Well my philosophy is if the crowd doesn't come then go to the crowd. We loaded up the mural in the back of the truck and drove around to find people. We came upon a large group of people having a co-op picnic with a gaggle of children running around. They were happy to let the kids go to town on the mural. Seconds after setting up the mural it was attacked by a dozen kids who feverishly painted until in about 15 minutes it was done. We thanked everyone and loaded it up and headed back.
Back at the fest site we two people (a lady with disabilities and an assistant) finally showed up to do art. They had heard about it through the agencies for people with disabilities that we contacted and sent posters to.
We packed up said thanks and goodbye to Carol who said she didn't understand why people didn't show up. She even gave me a newspaper clipping of an article about the party (with two big pictures) that they published from a press release I sent out.
While it seemed a bust it was a positive learning experience. I know now what categories of people to contact and what it feels like when you know they are committed to the event.
We will always need to confirm that we will have groups of kids, artists/creative types of all ages, people with disabilities and folks on their golden years. I have ideas now for the future.
We headed back to Sioux Falls and stopped at Lallibela's, one of my favorite spots to eat. This is authentic Ethiopian cuisine eaten community style. Pieces of spongy bread larger than pizza are brought out on big platters with awesome sauces and veggies in piles over the bread. No silverware, you break off a piece of bread, grab the food and toss it in your mouth. Danny asked if he cold eat somewhere else and this time I said "nope, you have to try this." 45 minutes later Danny was on his cell phone to his dad to tell him he had tried a new food and loved it.
We set up our music stuff at Black Sheep Coffee House just a few doors down from Lallibela's. Our friends Tamera and Lennie came out to hang with us, as well as The Smiths and the Roerich's. I told the story of the Fallout and stellar performance were had by Jeremy, Ill Medicine and Better Ride.

Day 3: Sioux Falls: Downtown Block Party

We got to hang out in the pool area in the morning since we didn't have a party until the afternoon this day. Toward noon we got our act together and headed over to the 8th Street Shopping area, a cool warehouse with several creative shops and chic restaurants. My friends Steve and Tova Bormes run Rugs & Relics, a very cool art gallery and they were the contact that got us the gig here. We ate at Sonaas, a great Mediteranean Restaurant. Hummos!
We set our tents up in an angle next to the main stage and had a very busy day as all of the people came out for the Downtown Block Party happening that day. A lady who spent time at our tents with her daughter emailed us later and did better at expaining the spirit of our event.

"I've seriously never seen anything like Fallout. I've been to plenty of art or kid tents/areas but none of them have been like Fallout. Rosi drew pictures with pastels, crayons, & markers & had them displayed; she made a sculpture that we left on the table & every time we passed the table, others had added to it; painted a square on the community mural; drew on the parking lot with sidewalk chalk; she had her face painted, played with bubbles, playdoh, hula-hoops and danced all in the Fallout area. She was in HEAVEN! We left the area twice - for food and a bathroom break.

What I loved about it was that it was such a free, open area - no rules, limits, or boundaries. When we've gone to other places, each child is handed one piece of paper, or one little ball of clay, or told how they should do something. Here it was total creative freedom.

I have to say my favorite thing about last night was seeing such an incredibly diverse crowd participating in the art activities together. Of course the kids were all over the Fallout area, but I saw a tatoo artist friend sitting at the sculpture table making a clay figure along with unknown toddlers, teens working on the mural along with a biker and a little kid, and three senior men (70's) making hearts with sidewalk chalk & putting their names in them - Joe + Sharon, etc.

Speaking just about people I know personally, I saw bikers, extreme right religious conservatives, potheads, hippies, low income, high income, you name it - all together in one small parking lot smiling, dancing, and enjoying a beautiful evening. Too bad all of life can't be like last night's block party."

Day Two: Sioux Falls - Augustana

I woke up early to hit the hot tub then head over to Menards with Daniel to figure out how to repair the Augustana Mural pieces. Used Menards parking lot as our repair shop and moved on to HyVee for fresh fruit before we dropped of the trailer at Augie and met up with Megan Peters our hostess to plan out setting up for the day. Megan is the director of Friendslink, an organization that hosts social events for adults with disabilities. We tossed around options to keep things from flying away in the wind. Friendslink generously donated lunch to all 9 of us and we got our money's worth at Hu Hot, a fun mongolian grill. I loved the lemon basil sauce but it made Daniel gag.
We fought the wind as we were setting up; the wind won. We decided we couldn't use the canopies or they'd get wrecked. Plan B was a fail: Tarps for sun block just ripped in the wind. My friends Derek and Brenda Smith (son and mom) came to help with the party. We scrambled to use the shaded space we had available and just as the first guests arrived we were ready.
John drew pictures of the musical performers, Better Ride had people dancing again and singing along. Mellissa just wanted to hang out for a while before she warmed up and did some sculpture. I found out she was a friend of my pal Jule who's from Sioux Falls but couldn't make it to the party. Boo.
Paint was flying at the mural with many people adding their artistry to it.
We're becoming experts in "party-tearing-down" it was all in the trailer in 45 minutes. This was followed by supper with Megan and Melissa at the Hy-Vee deli.
We finished off the night with a stop at Black Sheep Coffee House where we met up with old pal Alex Kolb.

Day One: Vermillion

We made it to Vermillion and had lunch with Kyle Hegge from South Dakota Advocates for Change. Danny doesn't like chinese food so he made his way to the sports bar for a cheese burger. After lunch we headed over to USD for Girls State where the ladies of our tour shared info about the Fallout to 450 girls from all over the state while the fellas set up for the party.
We coordinated a collaborative art piece with the Girls State girls the finished product was an artsy american flag with sketches and writings about participants future dreams. Over at the party site our hosts Cafe Brule were friendly and helpful and had awesome bevvies (aka drinks). Our major fail was we forgot the buckets to fill with water to hold down the canvases so we we're being a bit creative to keep from blowing away.

Tiffany Ruring (above) came early and stayed late. I was getting heckled during my set by an elderly guy. I met some people who were watching our films and they said they hadn't seen this elderly guys in years, he's their uncle and they thought he was dead for the past 10 years. they were quite surprised when they ran into him. The dark clouds never produced rain and the wind wasn't too bad until a random gust blew through and picked up and tossed the mural sections busting Augustana's piece in two. ILL Medicine and Jeremy played killer sets and Better Ride took the stage and drew a few people out to dance around.
Great Party! Good looking art by a gaggle vermillionites.
We finished up the night at a local cafe per Kyle's suggestion before heading to our Hotel in Sioux Falls.
